Custom MCP servers
Give every compatible bot extra tools from your own MCP servers, run on your Mac or reached at a URL.
Add an MCP server once and every compatible bot can use its tools. Tool calls still follow your normal approval settings.
Choose Connected apps in the sidebar, then the MCP servers tab.
Add a server
- Choose Add server and give it a Server name.
- Choose how Brainwrite reaches it:
- Run a command: enter the Executable command (for example
npx), put each argument on its own line, and add environment variables asKEY=value, one per line. - Connect to a URL: enter the Server URL and pick the Connection, Streamable HTTP for most servers or SSE for older ones. Put tokens in Headers, one
Name: valueper line, for exampleAuthorization: Bearer ….
- Run a command: enter the Executable command (for example
- Choose Save. A new server is saved switched off.
- Choose Test. Brainwrite connects, completes the MCP handshake and lists the tools the server offers.
- Choose Turn on when you are happy with it. New threads use the change.
Result size limit
Each server has a Result size limit · characters. Leave it blank for the default, 8,000 characters (about 2,000 tokens). Raise it for tools that return large structured documents, or enter 0 to never trim. A bot re-reads each result on every later model call, so a higher limit costs more. When a result is cut, the bot is told plainly how much it kept and that the rest was not shown, so it can narrow its request.
When a server can't start
For bots on a chat API engine, such as an OpenAI-compatible provider, a server of yours that fails to start is skipped for that message instead of stopping it: the chat shows a line saying the server was skipped for this turn, with the reason, and the bot answers with its other tools. This applies only to servers you added: if one of Brainwrite's own tool servers can't start, the message stops.
A server that ships inside an Electron app can be run by adding ELECTRON_RUN_AS_NODE=1 to its environment variables; Brainwrite accepts no other value for that variable.
Add servers from another app
Choose Paste config and paste the {"mcpServers": {…}} block from Claude Code, Cursor or Claude Desktop, then choose Add servers. They are added switched off; test each one, then turn it on.
Secrets stay saved, not shown
Brainwrite never shows a saved environment variable value or header value again; it lists only their names. When editing a server, leave an existing value blank to keep it, or remove its line to delete it.
Your Claude Code servers
By default, bots on the Claude engine get only the servers on this page, plus a bot project's own .mcp.json. They do not load the MCP servers and connectors from your own Claude Code setup, which keeps every bot's tools predictable and saves tokens.
Turn on Also use my Claude Code MCP servers to give Claude bots those as well, on every turn.
Turning a server off
Turn off keeps the server saved without offering its tools. Remove a server with its remove button.
Only add servers you trust
Commands run on your Mac with the environment variables you provide, and URL servers receive the headers you provide. Only add software and addresses you trust.
